Since 19 June 2026, a new rule has been reshaping daily life for online retailers in France: the online withdrawal function is now mandatory. In practice, your store must display a clearly identifiable withdrawal button, accessible throughout the legal cancellation period, allowing the customer to cancel their purchase in a few clicks.

Introduced by a 2026 ordinance modernising the French Consumer Code, this obligation is directly inspired by the "cancellation button" already required for subscription contracts. The lawmaker's goal: make exercising the right of withdrawal as easy as making the purchase. Here is what the law actually requires, the penalties involved, and how to bring your store into compliance without custom development.

The right of withdrawal: the essentials

The right of withdrawal lets any consumer who buys at a distance (internet, phone, catalogue) change their mind without justification. This principle is nothing new:

Until now, the customer had to notify their decision in writing (email, letter or form). What changes in 2026 is the form: simply providing a form is no longer enough.

What the 2026 ordinance changes: the online withdrawal function

The ordinance in force on 19 June 2026 requires a genuine interactive feature on your site. Three elements become mandatory:

1. A visible, clearly identifiable withdrawal button

A function such as "withdraw from contract here" must be present on the online interface and easy to spot by the consumer. It cannot be buried in the terms and conditions or hidden at the end of an obscure menu.

2. Permanent access throughout the 14-day period

This function must remain accessible free of charge for the entire withdrawal period, whether the customer is logged in or browsing as a guest.

3. Confirmation and acknowledgement on a durable medium

After clicking, the customer must be able to confirm their request, then automatically receive an acknowledgement on a durable medium (email), recording the date and content of their withdrawal.

Who is affected?

This obligation targets all professionals concluding distance contracts with consumers through an online interface: e-commerce sellers, but also certain financial service intermediaries (insurance, payment, investment advice).

Excluded from the scheme:

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

Some products remain excluded from the right of withdrawal, and your technical solution must be able to tell them apart:

Penalties: up to €75,000

Compliance is not optional. Failing to display a withdrawal function exposes you to an administrative fine:

On top of that comes a very real commercial risk: a customer who cannot find a way to exercise their right may report the store to the authorities, leave a negative review or start a dispute. Compliance is also a trust signal.
